Château Gloria

Located in the prestigious Saint-Julien appellation lies Château Gloria and it’s unique story. The vineyards were put together piece by piece over many years through the purchase of a series of plots, mostly from classified Growth in 1855. The quality of the wines is renowned across the globe, a reflection of the excellent vineyards and the care applied to both the vines and to the wines.
Let’s meet Jean Triaud
The Triaud Family are the lucky owners of Domaines Henri Martin, which owns both Château Saint-Pierre and Château Gloria and also Château Bel Air Gloria, a Cru Bourgeois Supérieur from the Haut-Médoc.

The Triaud Family

Françoise, Henri Martin’s daughter and her husband Jean-Louis Triaud, their children Vanessa and Jean are currently managing and taking care of Domaines Henri Martin vineyard. All of them are deeply involved in the company with the constant wish to improve the results and to maintain the best possible quality in their growths in a sustainable agriculture approach and in a family tradition.

Henri Martin’s lifetime achievement was no doubt the creation of Château Gloria.
Row by row of vines, parcel by parcel, he patiently and systematically negotiated with his owner friends in the commune of Saint-Julien to buy these various “cru classé” parcels superbly situated on Günzian gravel, which were to eventually make up the Château Gloria estate.

Honor the past, embrace the present, celebrate the future

Back in the Middle Ages there were two separate entities: The first, the “Tenure of Pellecahus” was to the East of the brook running through the property. The other was located on a hillock to the west and was known as the “Noble House of Lagrange de Monteil”. These two estates were to join in the seventeenth century, and so Lagrange was born.
Château Lagrange belonged to the same family for almost two centuries, thus maintaining its unity. One of its more charismatic characters was a certain Charles de Branne de Cours, who managed the domain from 1712 to 1746. In the heart of the viticultural revolution, he and his rich Bordeaux family (who also owned Mouton) were to make Lagrange one of the most beautiful Médoc properties.
In 1787, Thomas Jefferson, then United States ambassador, ranked Lagrange as a Third Classified Growth. Jean-Baptiste d’Arbouet sold Lagrange to Jean-Valère Cabarrus, his wife’s nephew, in 1790. Jean-Valère Cabarrus was from a renowned wine merchant family and chose to develop the viticultural activity of the estate.
Lagrange’s heyday was between 1842 and 1875, when Count Duchâtel, Home Secretary to King Louis Philippe, was the owner. His visionary avant-garde approach meant Lagrange was awarded the rank of Third Classified Growth in the official 1855 classification.

Château Gloria’s history is as unusual as it is fascinating.

It is true however that the Château is not a Cru Classé in itself, and for a very good reason. When the classifications were put in place in 1855, the estate did not yet exist. In any case, this Saint-Julien lives up to its name, with plenty of glory, success and no little faith. It is the reflection of a man from our era and how he “invented” a new estate, which he took to the very highest levels.

The Triaud Family applies an environmentally-friendly approach to their work, and their vines have received HVE3 and ISO14001 certification as a result. Moreover, all the estates are now on their way to becoming a fully organic vineyard. This forward-thinking strategy resonates particularly well with the new generation, who are always sensitive to the needs and desires of their consumers.
